Building an International Profile

Visibility: your work is not read because it exists, it is read because people find it

Excellent papers go unread every year, and the reason is almost always distribution rather than quality.

Visibility: your work is not read because it exists, it is read because people find it

Excellent papers go unread every year. The reason is almost never quality — it is that nobody who needed the paper ever found it.

Visibility is a separate piece of work from doing the research, and it is largely mechanical.

The mechanical part

  • A persistent researcher identifier, kept up to date.
  • A profile page listing your work, on your institution site or elsewhere.
  • Preprints where your field accepts them.
  • Consistent name spelling across every publication.
  • The last point sounds trivial and splits many researchers' records in two.

Make papers findable

  • Titles that state findings and contain searchable terms.
  • Abstracts carrying the key words someone would actually search.
  • Avoid subfield-only jargon in the title.

The human part

  • Present at conferences outside your immediate circle.
  • Accept review invitations — editors remember reliable reviewers.
  • Organise a session or workshop.
  • Collaborate outside your own institution.

Sharing your work

  • Send the paper to people whose work it builds on.
  • A short, specific message, not a mass mailing.
  • Most people are glad to know their work was useful.

Sustainable pace

  • Visibility work compounds slowly; a burst achieves little.
  • A small regular habit beats an occasional campaign.
  • None of it substitutes for good work.

One thing worth remembering

Spell your name exactly the same way on every publication.

Name variants split a publication record across several profiles, and databases will not merge them for you — it is the single cheapest thing you can do for your own visibility, and it only works if you start early.
