Career gaps: state them briefly and move on, because silence invites worse guesses

An unexplained gap is filled in by the reader, usually less favourably than the truth.

Career gaps: state them briefly and move on, because silence invites worse guesses

An unexplained gap in a CV gets filled in by the reader — and their guess is usually less favourable than whatever actually happened.

One clear line removes the question entirely.

How to state it

  • One line, factual, without apology.
  • Caring responsibilities, health, military service, industry work, migration.
  • In the cover letter or a short CV note, not as a long explanation.
  • Say what you did if anything relevant continued.

Non-linear paths

  • Time in industry, teaching, or another field is experience, not absence.
  • Name what it gave you: project management, data at scale, applied problems.
  • Frame the path as coherent rather than as a detour.

Adjusted assessment

  • Many funders and committees now assess output relative to opportunity.
  • Some explicitly ask you to declare periods of reduced activity.
  • Declare them; the mechanism only works if you use it.

What not to do

  • Do not leave unexplained years and hope nobody notices.
  • Do not over-explain or apologise repeatedly.
  • Do not disguise dates to hide the gap.

Returning after a break

  • Some schemes exist specifically for researchers returning.
  • A small grant or a short collaboration restarts a record.
  • Re-establish contact with two or three former colleagues first.

One thing worth remembering

State the gap in one factual line.

Readers stop wondering the moment they have an explanation, and a brief matter-of-fact statement reads as confidence — while silence leaves them to invent a reason, and invented reasons are rarely generous.

Câu hỏi thường gặp

Why explain a career gap?

Because an unexplained gap gets filled in by the reader, and their guess is usually less favourable than what actually happened.

How should you state it?

One factual line without apology, in the cover letter or a short CV note, mentioning anything relevant that continued.

How should non-linear paths be framed?

As experience rather than absence — name what industry, teaching or another field gave you, and frame the path as coherent.

What is adjusted assessment?

Many funders and committees assess output relative to opportunity and ask you to declare periods of reduced activity — the mechanism only works if you use it.

What helps when returning after a break?

Schemes that exist specifically for returning researchers, a small grant or short collaboration to restart a record, and re-establishing contact with former colleagues.
